The story of this building
In 1739, Hans Marty Eugster bought the Bären house for 1,500 guilders, and it began operating as an tavern. Maria Antonia Broger took the innkeeper's oath in 1795. In 1828, chief magistrate Broger sold the Bären over lunch to Hersche, treasurer of the poor-relief fund, who laid the purchase price on the table in cash. The tavern continued until 1831. It was demolished in 1845 and replaced in 1848, as was the Löwen hotel. Johann Josef Broger sold the Bären to the owner of the Löwen in 1858. Shops and businesses occupied the ground floor from 1860. Guido Sutter-Sutter acquired the enlarged Löwen hotel in 1973. Hansueli Rothenberger and Rita Bircher have run it as owners since 1996. At the time of the source publication, a gift shop and a pretzel-and-beer bar occupied the ground floor of the former Bären.
